Ding! Wolfbee with an affinity for web tech and silliness.

Writes some posts about #Emacs and #NixOS sometimes, but is definitely not an authority on it. Dabbling artist.

I’ve had a few days on, a few days off as I opt to take the bicycle while the other half takes our dog to the park to run around.

Pretty happy that my legs don’t completely turn to jelly once we get home, and while the uphill is still pretty tough (my bike is quite basic and offers little gearing) I eventually get there without having to stop

Apparently, #Twitter is having a fun (i.e. not good) time serving requests.

Tweetdeck does still work, and I’m seeing 2nd-hand reporting that the mobile app also still works.

Someone messed up.

Emacs orgmode, website

I pulled the social feed from #Akkoma into org-feed so I could show some recent posts on flawbee.net.

I probably won’t continue with it, because there are some problems I have with it today:

  1. Because the feed is an atom feed you need to set both :parse-feed org-feed-parse-atom-feed and :parse-entry org-feed-parse-atom-entry to get any content
  2. The datetime string needs to be manually corrected as it indicates when the entry was downloaded rather than when it was authored
  3. The content is written down both as a heading and as the contents, meaning I have to edit it to remove unnecessary content
  4. Sometimes the link to the external resource is a non-resolvable link, which means exporting from orgmode fails with an error, which then means I need to go back and find the original conversation to relink

All these issues could probably be resolved if I could write my own :parse-entry function, but I’m not actually any good at lisp so it’s not happening right now

If I were sensible I’d just put up with XWayland not scaling #Emacs properly, but I’ve done the foolish thing instead and went through a guide to build it properly on #NixOS.

To summarise, I followed the instructions at the GitHub repository (nix-community/emacs-overlay) in the Quickstart section, updating services.emacs.package to pkgs.emacsPgtk, then sudo nix-channel --update && sudo nixos-rebuild switch.

The result is several minutes of compilation, but the end result is that it scales properly and all the text looks very nice on my screen.

I spent so much time getting it to work, but it’s very much worth it if you have a #HiDPI screen.

In case someone is interested in how much bandwidth it takes to run a few web services and Akkoma for yourself, not that much surprisingly!

Downloaded some system updates on 19 November, faffed about with Pleroma and installing Akkoma on Podman on November 20, and then day to day running since then.

⚠ Note that this is an instance that I run purely for myself (single-user) so this doesn’t represent a medium or even a small community

I’ve added the official mascot for The Beep Zone to the site: meet The Buzzer Bee! 🐝

Note: while the button is connected to the buzzer, I ran out of space to draw a buzzer so you’ll just have to trust me on this
