I ended up giving Delta Chat a proper go to see how it differed from Telegram and made a blog post out of it.

In short: it’s quick to get into (thanks to chatmail servers), it’s good for private chats, has some cool apps that somehow work within IMAP and SMTP, but it’s not as good for group chats, and there’s no consensus on sticker implementation.
