So I know I am probably going to get biased responses, but please try and be a bit objective. What makes you prefer posting on the #Fediverse over #ATProto / #Bluesky ? I really wanna pick people’s brains on this. I will go first:
I like the concept of portable identity that Bsky talks about however it still feels very much the same exact thing as running your own instance on #ActivityPub but worse as you mainly going to be on PDS that connects to the central BGS that Bluesky operates so you can interact with others, but now they have the power to just block you from everyone else on the BGS… with #ActivityPub you are not having to speak to a centralized BGS you are sending to anything that requests to receive your feed similar to RSS… and you can block still if you don’t want to see stuff from another instance as your instance or personal level without effecting other instances or people depending on the level you block it at.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
Most users tend to pick a side of things, but recently I chose option 3: write it on my website then syndicate it like a weirdo lmao
I do this because I believe in connecting not so much to the social network platform, but to the people themselves. The social graph is more important than what or where it is.
Incidents with Twitter and Reddit have demonstrated how users are driven away, so I make a conscious effort to stay connected with the friendships I’ve made across the networks that I believe in (or at least don’t actively hate). This way everyone knows where to find me if one day either network collapses, or if a new one appears that people really want to flock to.

@hack13 The fediverse supports more features than ATProto does right now, and OpenMicroBlogging/OStatus/ActivityPub have been around in one form or another for a long time so it's naturally going to be more stable.
On the other hand, ATProto seems to promise a better way of doing federation than ActivityPub - I prefer the BGS/PDS split over the single-tier instance structure - and I think custom feeds offer a more versatile and robust solution than relays when it comes to populating a timeline.
@earfolds That is fair, and I agree… and it isn’t like bridges cannot be built. Something I wanna try to do once the protocol allows me to do so, I could try now with the Public Sandbox.
I personally out of all the different protocols out there right now, kinda been enjoying the idea behind #Nostr the best. I like the concept of not tying to a single BGS… and not having to have a PDS either. That you just join relays, and the relays are the only thing handling your data, and you can host your own relay if you wanna own the data you post and people can subscribe to your relay to get your posts. BGS custom feeds thing is nice, but I feel like there should be a better way of doing that on the #ActivityPub protocol… because I agree custom feeds make #Bluesky way more attractive to normal every day users. As they have grown more accustom to “feeds” vs following individuals.
@hack13 I don't have a bsky account. For me it's more of a gut feeling thing why I didn't bother to get one:
- Not sure about this jack dorsey person/another tech company app
- The scramble for an invite code (artificial scarcity) turns me off.
- I like that there is no tracking/monetization on here.
- While some popular furry artists I like aren't here (still on twitter or migrated to bsky), there are lots more on here than I can keep track. Non furry art here is great too.
- I really enjoy the hashtag discovery system.
That said, if bsky does take off, I will get an account for my business side of things, not for personal.
@hack13 I dunno anything you just said so i'll just say "Yes" and move along
@hack13 I'll be honest, I didn't even know about the ATProto, but Bluesky i was looking at, but waiting for a code, wasn't happening for me. I'll probably have to dig some before i can give a clear answer.
@JTgrayfire Bluesky is built on their own protocol they call ATProto. So it’s sorta the same thing.
@hack13 Alright, from what I can give from a top level view, I feel things are working more here than at bluesky, but as I can tell, both sides are still in early stages aren't they? I'm sure things can change in time, but I'm still leaning to being here for now.
@JTgrayfire well technically Mastodon has been around since 2016 and it was built ontop of the protocol ActivityPub which came out in 2018 so they moved to join that standard. ActivityPub is governed by W3C which is a nonprofit organization that provides services for international development standards.
BlueSky is a private company which was founded in October 2021. Who develops their own protocol ATProto. It was also spun off by Jack the Co-Founder of Twitter. So it’s much younger and less developed, aka only supports static images (no gifs) and text atm. It also doesn’t have DMs either. However, they focused on custom feeds vs Pub/Sub model of ActivityPub.(meaning No algorithm, just what you follow)
So yeah, they each have their own unique design. But Mastodon has been around longer and adapted to an internet standard with a transparent group that people can join. Where ATProto is open source, it answers to a broad of investors.
@dameoutlaw fair but you can always run instances for yourself on things like GoToSocial which is backwards compatible with mastodon clients and is very light and easy to set up and run.
I agree that nostr is pretty cool as well, but it also has issues of relays with so operates them and probably want to run your own relay as well.
